Environmental Challenges in Gauteng

Gauteng, South Africa’s economic hub, faces a growing range of environmental challenges. Rapid urbanization and industrial activity have placed increasing pressure on the province’s natural systems, contributing to severe air and water pollution that affects both human health and biodiversity. Poor waste management and illegal dumping continue to degrade landscapes and waterways, while expanding urban development drives habitat loss and fragmentation. At the same time, snare poaching remains widespread in greenbelts, farms, and open spaces, silently devastating wildlife populations and leaving many areas stripped of once-common mammals.
