Invasive Plants

In Gauteng, invasive plants pose a significant ecological threat to the region's native biodiversity. Some notable invasive species in Gauteng include Lantana camara (Lantana), various Eucalyptus species, and the notorious Pompom Weed (Campuloclinium macrocephalum). These invasives often spread rapidly, displacing native flora and impacting local fauna by reducing food sources and altering ecological relationships. The invasion also has economic consequences, affecting agriculture and water resources. Concerted efforts should be in place in Gauteng to manage and control the spread of invasive plants through strategies such as targeted removal, ecological restoration, and public awareness campaigns.
