Question 1

Can anyone attend a snare removal exercise?

Accepted Answer

Due to the strenuous and  sometimes dangerous nature of snare removal work, we only allow healthy and fit individuals between the  ages of 14 and 65 to attend.

Participants may be required to walk 10km through rugged terrain, and thus need to have a relative level of fitness.

If we feel for any reason that you do not meet the above mentioned requirement, we reserve the right to exclude you from any excursion.

Where do we meet?

Accepted Answer

We will communicate and advertise all meeting points for each event well in advance. 
Should there be any deviation, this will be communicated to participants at the soonest opportunity.

Question 3

What time do we meet?

Accepted Answer

Each event has it's own requirements.

The meeting time for each event will be clearly stated in the event advertisement and communicated to participants.

An overview of the day's scheduled activities will be provided during a briefing before we embark on our journey into the wilderness.

Question 4

What is the expected duration of a  snare removal exercise?

Accepted Answer

Each event has it's own requirements, but expect a duration of about 4-5 hours.

Please take note, the timing might vary slightly based on the day's conditions, leading to potential adjustments in the operation's conclusion

Question 5

What happens if there is rain forecast for the day. Will the event go ahead?

Accepted Answer

We will assess the situation on the day and make the decision to go ahead or postpone the event.

Unless there is severe weather the operation usually goes ahead as planned.

Question 6

How much water should I carry?

Accepted Answer

It's essential and required for all participants to carry a sufficient amount of drinking water throughout the snare removal walk. We recommend having 2 liters of drinking water.

Question 7

What clothing should I wear?

Accepted Answer

You are allowed to wear any comfortable, rugged clothing suitable for the bush.

Recommended clothing:
- Long sleeve shirt to help protect against the sun.
- Long pants or trousers help protect against the thorny landscape and keep ticks out.
- Sturdy and rugged, yet comfortable walking shoes or boots. Sickle bush spines can penetrate through many types of soles.
- A hat is highly recommended, as there is often little shade from the harsh African sun.

Question 8

Do I need to bring any tools or equipment?

Accepted Answer

You are welcome to bring along any equipment or tools you feel may be useful. Keep in mind that it adds to the weight one has to carry along.

Tools that are recommended for snare removal work:

· Multi-tool (Leatherman etc. Works well for smaller nylon, wire, and cable snares)
· Side-cutter (Works well on wire and thinner cable snares)
· Small bolt cutter (Works well for wire and cable snares. Small sizes such as 200-450mm are best)

Question 9

May I take photographs?

Accepted Answer

Photography of the day's events and while on the walk is encouraged.

Any snares encountered should be photographed before they are removed.

You are not allowed to publish or distribute the following:
Any photographs  of endangered fauna & flora. 
Any photograph or pin/coordinate that may reveal a location of any endangered plant or animal.
Any photograph/s where the faces of Anti Poaching Unit rangers are visible.
Any photographs showing sensitive information in regards to strategic planning or other security related matters.
