Friends of Borakalalo Nature Reserve
A Collaborative Conservation Initiative
Borakalalo National Park is a unique ecological and cultural asset nestled in the North West Province.
Rich in biodiversity and history, the park faces significant challenges, including poaching, vandalism, infrastructure decline, and reduced tourism. These pressures threaten both its ecological integrity and the opportunities it can offer surrounding communities.
Recognizing this, a group of stakeholders came together to form Friends of Borakalalo, a collaborative initiative aimed at supporting the park’s turnaround.
This partnership includes various stakeholders and entities, from the reserve management, to local communities.
The aim of the initiative is to:
-
Support the sustainable recovery and management of Borakalalo National Park
-
Assist with infrastructure upgrades, conservation projects, and operational challenges
-
Promote community involvement and tourism development
-
Improve public perception and visitation of the park
-
Facilitate funding and partnerships to secure its long-term future

While Borakalalo lies outside Rooikat Conservation’s primary focus region, we recognize its significant conservation value and the importance of investing time, effort, and resources into its recovery.
Rooikat Conservation is proud to have played a key role in helping establish Friends of Borakalalo and remains committed to supporting the initiative through facilitation, networking, and technical expertise.
Our shared vision is a revitalized Borakalalo National Park. A thriving conservation area that delivers lasting ecological, social, and economic benefits to the region. Friends of Borakalalo exists as the vehicle to help realize that vision, built on cooperation, shared commitment, and a collective passion for nature conservation.
