Snaring: A Growing Threat to South Africa’s Biodiversity
South Africa is facing a serious wildlife crisis; the widespread use o f snares poses a severe threat to our biodiversity.
In response, the Snaring National Advisory Group (SNAG) was established in 2025 as a collaborative, non‑mandated network of organizations and individuals committed to addressing this urgent issue.
What is SNAG?
SNAG is a national platform that connects stakeholders from across sectors, including conservation NGOs, government bodies, researchers, legal experts, and communities, with the goal of sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and taking coordinated action to mitigate and prevent wildlife snaring.

SNAG has six key objectives:
-
Knowledge sharing: Maintain a collaborative platform for learning and exchanging information on snaring management at multiple scales.
-
Coordination: Promote an integrated approach to snaring mitigation and prevention through research, legislation, and conservation strategy alignment.
-
Expert collaboration: Establish sub-groups to develop and share case studies, data, and best-practice guidelines on prevention, mitigation, enforcement, and community engagement.
-
Policy advocacy: Work with policymakers, legal experts, and enforcement agencies to strengthen anti-snaring
legislation.
-
Detection and removal: Improve snare detection and removal through technology and community participation.
-
Socioeconomic solutions: Address the root causes of snaring by supporting sustainable livelihoods and community partnerships.
